Capstan History.

Don Paullin founded Capstan Incorporated in 1956. Pictured right is an original drawing from 1964 showing his Capstan Permaflow sintered filter innovation to the world. In 1981, Mark Paullin, Gen 2 joined Capstan and the company purchased Kwikset Locks the same year. In 1987, Capstan Inc. purchased SinterMetals and renamed this to Capstan Atlantic. Remington PM in Hazen, Arkansas was acquired in 1993, named Capstan Inland before being sold in 1997 to family members in the industry. Capstan Mexico was established in 1996 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Caterpillar PM division was acquired in 2004 becoming Capstan Tennessee for a decade. In 2013, Christian Paullin, Gen 3 joined Capstan California and Capstan Tennessee was sold. After the Capstan Inland and Tennessee sales, Capstan purchased Melling Sintered Metals in Oklahoma and Chapin Paullin, Gen 3 joined during the acquisition process. Capstan Atlantic was turned over to employees as an ESOP in 2023 and renamed Atlantic Sintered Metals. Family owned and operated for over 70 years of leadership in the powder metal industry.

The company principally operates through its three manufacturing locations – Capstan California (Los Angeles), Capstan Permaflow (Los Angeles), and Capstan Mexico (Guadalajara) – with each location specializing in different segments of the PM industry.

Mark Paullin

Capstan Incorporated – Chief Executive Officer
Mark Paullin, Gen 2, CEO – Son of Don Paullin – Founder, Mark has guided Capstan since 1980 overseeing the expansions of Capstan Atlantic (sold), Capstan Inland (sold), Capstan Mexico, Capstan Tennessee (sold), and Capstan California. Mark has a MBA from University of Southern California and an Economics BS from BYU. Mark has been able to grow Capstan substantially while keeping the company privately owned as a leading global powder metal company.

Bonnie Gonzales

Capstan Incorporated – Chief Financial Officer
Bonnie joined Capstan in 1975 working directly for Don Paullin, Capstan’s founder. Bonnie studied Accounting at California State Fullerton and received her BA while working at Capstan. Her contribution and leadership over many years have been crucial to Capstan’s success.

Christian Paullin

Capstan Permaflow – President of Filter Technologies
Christian Paullin, Gen 3, joined Capstan Permaflow in 2014 as Operations Manager. Christian graduated in Biology from Claremont McKenna College and took a leave of absence to earn his MBA from University of Southern California. In 2018, Christian rejoined Capstan as President of Filter Technologies overseeing the growth and strategies of porous operations.

Chapin Paullin

Capstan California – President
Chapin Paullin, Gen 3, joined Capstan in 2012 overseeing acquisition of Melling Sintered Metals in Oklahoma. Chapin joined Capstan Atlantic’s team in 2014 developing new programs. In 2017, Chapin moved to Capstan California to oversee production manufacturing. Chapin graduated in Economics  from Westminster College and plans to pursue an MBA in the coming years. In 2023, Chapin became President of Capstan California.

Gerardo Ochoa V.

Capstan Mexico – General Manager
Gerardo was promoted to General Manager of Capstan Mexico in 2022. Gerardo joined Capstan Mexico over 20 years ago as Project Engineer and has overseen the growth and expansion of product lines. In 2021, Gerardo oversaw the transition from endo gases to new disassociated ammonia and nitrogen furnaces. Gerardo has been a key player in the success of Capstan Mexico. Gerardo has a mechanical engineering degree from Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

Enrique Barba

Capstan Mexico – Vice President of Sales
Enrique started working at Capstan Mexico in 1995 after his completion of training at SinterStahl. Enrique was previously General Manager of Capstan Mexico for over 15 years and is now VP of Sales for Capstan Mexico. Enrique has an electrical engineering degree from  Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

David Morales

Capstan California – Project Engineer
David joined Capstan California in 2018 as Lead Setup Technician after more than 30 years experience at ASCO Sintering. In 2021, David was promoted to Project Engineer and Setup Trainer to oversee the new generation of talented professionals learn the setup trade. David has succeeded in developing award winning programs here at Capstan California, winning awards at the MPIF trade shows.

Ilya Kuleshov

Capstan California – Quality Manager
Ilya joined Capstan California in 2023 as Quality Manager. He completed his project management progam at UCLA in 2022 after moving to Los Angeles, CA from Moscow, Russia. Ilya holds a Black Belt certification in Lean Six Sigma and is a Professional Scrum Master. Ilya is crucial in leading Capstan to IATF-16949 certification in 2025.
